When you hear the words "garage door," what comes to mind? People often picture a steel or aluminum roll-up garage door that has a few horizontal segments. Indeed, this style of garage door has become quite popular in the United States. It's affordable, functional, and coordinates with many different styles of homes. However, it is not the only kind of garage door that exists. Here are a few other styles of garage doors to consider if you'd rather have something less conventional.

Side-Slide Garage Doors

What if, instead of rolling up over your head, your garage door slid to the side? Side-slide garage doors used to be popular before automatic garage door openers became so commonplace. The door is mounted on wheels inside a frame, and to open or close it, you just push it to the side. If you have a garage with a low ceiling, this type of door can work really well. You won't have to worry about hitting your head on an overhead opener. Side-slide garage doors are also one, single piece, so you can find ones that have more customized patterns and looks. Some are even made from wood, which gives them a traditional look you can't get as easily with an overhead or roll-up garage door.

Side Hinge Doors

Side-hinged garage doors are similar to the double doors you may find in a house. You have two of them — one on either side of the door opening. They come together in the middle and meet with a latch. To open the garage door, you fold the left door to the left and the right door to the right. Side hinge garage doors have a very traditional look and would fit in well in a Craftsman or Victorian home. However, they can be a little cumbersome to work around when they are open.

Pocket Doors

A pocket door is one that slides into the wall space to the side of it. If your garage has proper walls, a pocket door-style garage door could be a very good choice. The door will be completely out of the way when it is open. To close it, you just roll or slide it across the door opening. You can have a garage pocket door made from almost any material such as wood, steel, or aluminum.
